Sue Kleeman Retires After 25 Years of Service

When Sue Kleeman started working at the Property Association Office in 1985 as a part time office assistant and part time security there were 250 houses in CLV. Many things have changed over the years, while some have stayed the same, Kleeman acknowledges.

Sue and her husband Bob moved to CLV in August of 1985 and by December, Sue was working at the association office. After 10 months of splitting her time between security and office assistant, Kleeman made the move to full time office work and eventually becoming the Office Manager.

“I oversee the running of the office,” Kleeman said. “I do payroll, take the monies, everything that goes on. I make sure it all happens in a timely manner.”

Why retire now? “It’s the right time. I’m in good health. We already have a trip planned! Bob wants to see an air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin,” Kleeman said. “We’ve got a tentative plan for Alaska in the fall. I would also like to go see Utah.”

“There are so many beautiful places in the U.S. to see. We wouldn’t rule out foreign travel. When you have family, you always work around seeing them.”

As far as retirement goes, Kleeman already has several plans. Kleeman is looking forward to spending more time with Bob and getting to see her two children and their families more. Her son Tony lives in Rockton, IL with his family and her daughter, Melissa live in Chicago with her husband.

Over the years, Sue has enjoyed getting to know the local people. She has also seen and heard a number of unusual stories and requests.

“The funniest thing that happened to our manager one time was a lady called him on a Saturday afternoon, to come get rid of a dog that was dropping fleas on her driveway,” Kleeman laughed. Kleeman commented that people sometimes made very strange requests!

“When they were renovating the offices to add more post office boxes I had something really strange happen,” Kleeman commented. “A man was in the attic working when I heard this loud boom and when I looked up; all I saw was a leg sticking through my ceiling. I was scared he was dead because he wasn’t making any noise. I asked if he was okay and he quietly said yes, but it scared me to death!”

“I will miss seeing the people.” Kleeman said as far as what she will miss when she retires. “Most of the people are so nice. It’s like family.”

Diving Board Removed Due To Rising Insurance Costs

For those who grew up in this area, the removal of the high dive is removing a rite of passage. Jumping off the high dive was a way to impress friends, boyfriends/girlfriends, and prove to yourself that you were courageous.

The high dive was removed recently due to rising cost of insurance. The board had the option to leave the high dive up but the insurance company would have charged a larger premium, Property Manager Mark Kroeger said. Because of the larger fee and trying to keep costs under control, the board opted to not cover the high dive.

Resurfacing Tennis & Basketball Courts

The tennis and basketball courts at Holly Park will get a much needed makeover this month. The tennis courts will receive a new surface while the basketball courts will get a new surface, goal posts, goals, and nets.

While this work is taking place one or both of these courts may be closed. Please call the gate house to find out if they are closed before making the trip over.

Lake Weed Abatement

The lake weed abatement program will begin soon. Property Manager Kroeger has ordered $11,000 worth of weed killer, which is nearly half of the annual budget for lake weed control.

“We treat the weeds once in the spring, early summer and then again in the Fall,” Kroeger said. “You never know how the weeds will be. We stay as close to the budget as we can and treat them as they appear.”

PSC Cleanup and Fiber to Home Transition

As PSC wraps up their fiber to the home project, residents in CLV will continue to see cleanup and restoration take place along with transferring existing customers over to fiber networks and installation for new customers as well.

“The cleanup process is still going on,” states PSC Plant Manager Daren Brown. “Any concern about cleanup or restoration, we want people to give us a call. We’re not going anywhere and there’s not a deadline as far as we are concerned for things that need to be fixed.”

Brown said that postcards were sent to around 200 homes in CLV, informing existing customers about the ability to upgrade to the fiber network and telling potential customers they could add services now, while PSC crews were working in CLV. Additional postcards will be sent soon to others in CLV.

For people with existing services from PSC (internet, cable, and/or telephone) to update to fiber could take between two and four hours. “It’s going to be a little difficult, because we need to get into the house and on the premises,” Brown said of transferring existing customer’s services to fiber. “The scheduling and logistics is going to be a real problem.”

There will be no additional fees for existing customers to transfer services to fiber. It will only be a time commitment during the day in order for the technicians to access your house.

Brown wanted to stress to residents of CLV that “if there are problems and needs we want to prioritize them and take care of them. Our priority is to maintain a good relationship.”

CLV Holds First Catfish Tournament

Anglers of all ages are encouraged to participate in CLV’s first Catfish Tournament on August 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be cash prizes based on the number of entrants.

During the tournament there will be a Fish Tail Gate Party at the big lake marina. You will need to bring your own grill, food supplies and chairs. No alcohol will be permitted.

The prize money will be distributed as follows:
· First Prize: $300.00 or 30% of entry fees for largest fish (Measured by the Length)

A Message from Board Member Greg Robinson

It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas. As a child I usually started thinking about Christmas after my birthday in February. Now as an adult it starts around Thanksgiving, but this year is different!

For the first time I’m going to decorate my house for the Festival of Lights. With Phil Koch’s Christmas Store and Lake Rudolph’s light show, the Town of Santa Claus saw a nice increase in tourism. I felt guilty for not putting up some lights.

That’s why this year, I’m not going to be the Christmas Scrooge with the Dark House. I want to help put on a good show for our guests and hope they leave with a nice warm Christmas feeling that only the great residents of Santa Claus can put on.

With this I welcome all residents of CLV and the town of Santa Claus to show our guests why our town is called Santa Claus. And for the first time in 12 years, I won’t be the Christmas Scrooge in Polar Shores and hope others might be able to follow this year and for many more.

Merry Christmas!

A Message from Property Manager Mark Kroeger

I look back through past articles and find that many subjects have appeared on more than one occasion. I touched base on this subject back in December but it bears repeating.

This IS a gated community. There may be times when waiting for a minute at the gate happens. Mostly this happens in the late afternoon during the week, but can happen at other times as well. There are times when a larger vehicle in the right hand lane obscures the view of the gate officer.

There are some ways that our members can assist in streamlining the gate process.

A simple item that would have the biggest impact is to call the gate officer at 544-9108 and let them know of any visitors that you are expecting. This is anyone who is not on a guest list, including workers or service people coming to your home. This is particularly important at this time of the year when there are numerous teens entering the Village to use our beach. Remember that a member can be held liable for damage caused by their guest. The resident lane is typically slowed while the guard is attempting to contact a member for an unannounced visitor.

If you have paid your 2010 assessment, get the proper sticker on your car. If you don’t have a sticker, understand that the guard may not know you and will have to ask who you are.

Please use the right hand lane if your sticker is outdated.

What the Association can do…I have received approval to pursue pricing and information on Village access via proximity card. This means that members in good standing will have a card in their car that is automatically read as the vehicle approaches the gate. The card can be programmed to activate both of our current gates, and any future gates that may be installed. The gate officer can give full attention to a guest and a member can automatically enter without waiting. There are numerous benefits to this system. A video surveillance system is also being pursued which may become part of this package. Details of these systems are expected to be reviewed at the July Board meeting.
